— To Kurt Weller
| ||
Rich Dotcom, born Gordon Meredith Enver, is a former criminal, FBI consultant and current fugitive. He started his criminal career as a tech mercenary until he realized that Bitcoin would be a big deal in the future and took this chance to become a billionaire.
He later changed his name to Rich Dotcom.
Season 1[]
He's first seen in Authentic Flirt as the prime suspect of possessing a leaked WITSEC list which must be retrieved by Jane and Kurt during Rich's party.
In One Begets Technique, unable to stand life in Ryker's, Rich approaches the FBI, promising to help them bring in a notorious criminal banker for many terrorist organizations. However, it was in fact a ruse to steal 12 priceless black market paintings from the professor who stole them and had his boyfriend Boston Arliss Crab duplicate them so he could escape custody.
Season 2[]
In Resolves Eleven Myths, Rich hacks the New York Office's computer, demanding that Kurt, now Assistant Director, launch a drone strike at a provided set of coordinates in exchange for him not wiping out the FBI's database. Kurt figured out that Rich had broken into his apartment, which had a secure line to the NYO, due to his comment about his own beer. Rich seemed awfully relaxed about his arrest and revealed that he really wanted the FBI's protection from an assassin called the Acadian, claiming that the assassin was sent by Kim Jong-Un, and had murdered Boston.
When the Acadian captured and poisoned Zapata and demanded that Rich be left alone for him to kill, Kurt came up with a plan for Reade and Nas to find her while Rich created a camera loop to make it seem to the Acadian that he was alone so Kurt and Jane could ambush him.
After the Acadian was killed and Zapata was cured, while being transported to prison, Boston is revealed to be alive and driving the truck and Rich's two guards provide him the key to his cuffs. However, they are pulled over by the FBI, as Patterson had figured out that Rich lied about Boston's death because the tale of his death resembles that of Dobby in Harry Potter. Rich and his cohorts are then taken into custody.
He later returned in Borrow Or Rob.
Season 3[]
The Three Blind Mice[]
It is revealed that Rich Dotcom, Patterson, and Kathy Gustafson were a hacker collective called The Three Blind Mice. During that time they performed several illegal hacks to expose corruption. But they eventually disbanded.
Kathy, upset that Rich and Patterson broke up the team, kidnaps them and puts shock collars on them to keep them from escaping. She wants to be friends forever.
Season 4[]
Careless Whisper[]
He was included in Winston Pear's novel "Inked to Death: A Jane Doe Mystery" as "Rich Dotbiz". In the novel he is romantically paired with Patterson, a coupling both of them find distasteful.
Later[]
Rich and Patterson are invited to be bridesmaids in Kathy's wedding. She blackmails them into donating $200,000 each so she won't reveal their involvement in the Three Blind Mice. Rich admits he'll have trouble coming up with the money, so Patterson pays for his portion. Rich is disappointed that he can't keep the suit Kathy picked out for him.
Season 5[]
- Rich: "Pretty much my whole life, like, since preschool, I've been certain that I'm the smartest person in the room."
- Patterson: "That's not a secret. You say that all the time."
- Rich: "And it's this certainty that allowed me to go to some very dark places where I acted on my worst possible instincts. But then I met you guys. And all of a sudden, I'm not the smartest person in the room anymore because that person is you."
- Patterson: "Yeah?"
- Rich: "I have spent the better part of the last four years in perpetual awe of your genius."
- Patterson: "What? Really?"
- Rich: "Yeah. If we have to find another hideout, if we catch Madeline tomorrow instead of today, I say... big schlemiel. Because I know we will. Because there is nobody I have more confidence in in the entire world than you, including me."
- ―Ghost Train
Rich Dotcom is tortured at a CIA black site because Madeline Burke wants to know where his team is hiding. But Rich doesn't know. Finally, the CIA decides to trade him to North Korea so they can get an operative back. Rich asks them to shoot and kill him instead. But before he can be sent away, Weller's team rescues him.
In We Didn't Start the Fire, Rich suggests they put art on the bunker walls to make it feel more like home. While Weller and Patterson infiltrate the Finland conference, their cover is nearly blown because Rich forgot to put gas in the generator (which they needed so his code could hack the system and declare their fake IDs valid). But he puts gas in just in time. Natasha Zapata recognizes that even if Rich is putting on a brave face, he is dealing with the trauma of being tortured. She brings him an art poster for the walls and offers to listen if he wants to talk about it.
In Existential Ennui, Rich brings a coffee maker to the bunker to help with morale. When the team wastes time arguing, he stops them and reminds them that while everyone has made mistakes, everyone has also helped the team. Weller gives Rich a gun and Rich excitedly remarks that they are trusting him with a gun for the first time. When they kill an intruder, Rich says they need to be respectful of the body or his ghost will haunt them.
In Fire & Brimstone, Rich shows insight into Patterson. He recognizes that she is being highly protective of Zapata's baby because she can't do anything to help her own family (e.g. her dad, who is on the run).
In Ghost Train, Patterson realizes that the newest puzzle is a trap. While she worked on decoding it, Madeline's team had been locating their bunker. Patterson begins to doubt herself, but Rich helps her regain her confidence, telling her that since he met her, she (and not he) has been the smartest person in the room.
They go back to blow up the server room. Rich is captured while Patterson is trapped in the room that is rigged to explode with Thermite. Rich is captured and tearfully lets Kurt and Jane know that Patterson did not make it out.
Physical Appearance[]
Rich' style.
Rich is average in height, has brown eyes, curly hair, a stylized beard, and olive skin. During his time as tech mercenary, his attire consisted of rather formal looks. After his incorporation to the team as a FBI consultant, he starts wearing more casual outfits, e.g.: light bomber jackets, tight pants, and loafers, showing his carefree-yet-polished style.
Trivia[]
- He has Zapata's number under "What's Her Name".

- His favorite movie is Speed.
- He is bisexual or pansexual, polyamorous, and a shameless flirt.
