Events[]
Early life[]
Natasha Zapata's father left her and her siblings when she was just five years old to the care of their alcoholic mother; her parental neglect forced her kids to raise themselves. It's implied that Zapata had a close relationship with her grandmother.
Law Enforcement[]
Zapata started her Law Enforcement career as a New York Police Department Officer in the 96th Precinct where she worked for five years and made friends with her former partner, Andy. While responding to a domestic abuse call her partner was killed. This brought a severe gambling addiction and alcohol abuse.
Season 1[]
Tasha joins the FBI after working in the NYPD, and openly admitted working hard to be part of Mayfair's team. She met Reade on the first day at the FBI, and the two eventually became close friends after being forced to work on cold case files together.
Jane Doe case[]
Zapata was introduced as one of the agents that had worked in Kurt Weller's case histories and was assigned to find a possible suspect that could've been related to the recently Jane Doe left in Times Square for the FBI to find.
Upon Jane's arrival, Zapata often briefed the team on new breakthroughs regarding the case and on more than one occasion, she showed advanced knowledge in computers and software, being able to hack into suspects' laptops to get intel on their whereabouts.
Although she had reservations toward Kurt's closeness to Jane and his lack of objectivity around her, Zapata never spoke about it directly with him, however she showed great concern about Reade's behavior regarding his mistrust to Jane and admitted that even though the circumstances surrounding her case were mysterious, they were no reason to be suspicious about her.
Zapata kept her gambling addiction and debts in secret, even from Reade who once saw her talking to Randy, Zapata's bookie, on the street, oblivious about their relationship. Her financial problems made it impossible to pay off her debt, even under Randy's constant threats, being this the reason why she accepted Thomas Carter's illegal money when he offered it in exchange of intel about Jane Doe. In one of their meetings, Carter told Zapata that the files on Jane barely had any useful information and extorted her to bug Jane's home; incapable of doing so, she ditched Carter's devises and signed a resignation letter before she was charged as guilty for selling confidential intel. Before she could hand Bethany Mayfair the letter, she was told that Carter was missing and presumed dead, making her ditch the document.
When one of Jane's tattoos led the team to the murder of two New York Police Officers, Zapata was touched by the circumstances surrounding their deaths which reminded her of her former partner, Andy, who got shot to death when he and Zapata were answering to a domestic call back in her time working for the Police Department.
While FBI agents swept her apartment during an investigation led by Jonas Fischer, US Attorney Matthew Weitz planted a bug somewhere in her home right after her bookie, Randal Luskey, was apprehended; he called Zapata and both set up a meet for the next day where he mentioned that even though he knew about her gambling addiction and that she sold confidential documents to the CIA, he wasn't interested on ending her career but wanted intel on Carter in exchange, in order to understand his obsession with Jane Doe and their connection to Bethany Mayfair.
While the team was alerted about a women trafficking ring through another tattoo, Zapata volunteered to be sent undercover; she was kidnapped during the operation but managed to help and free the women kept in captivity and escaped alive before the building was consumed by the flames.
Season 2[]
Two months after Jane's arrest, Weller congratulates his team after successfully apprehending a counterfeiter and notices that Zapata and Reade exchange stern looks. When he pushes them to share their thoughts, Zapata admits that they miss working the tattoos before they're taken back to New York by Nas Kamal, NSA, who introduced herself as part of an off book branch of the NSA and informing the team that she needs their help to recapture Jane after she escaped from a black site run by the CIA in Oregon.
Back at the FBI, the team learns from Jane herself that she was involved in Mayfair's death. Zapata was the most unforgiving one of the group due to her closeness to her former boss.
Season 3[]
Following the downfall of Sandstorm, Tasha is recruited by Jake Keaton and joins the CIA. Reade feels hurt by her decision to leave the team. However, she quickly becomes the protégé of Keaton and becomes involved with the team again once Jane & Weller return. As part of the joint task force formed to take on Roman and his new tattoo cases, Tasha represents the CIA and often reveals crucial information needed for the new tattoo cases.
When the team discovers that Borden is still alive and that Tasha is his CIA handler, it forms a rift between her and the other members, especially Patterson. With time, though, her and Patterson renew their friendship.
Following the arrest of Eleanor Hirst, Tasha is assigned as one of her interrogators. Later, during the effort to stop Hank Crawford, Tasha is ordered to steal a foreign diplomat's cell phone and hand it over to Keaton. When she is caught in the act on video, however, Keaton denies all knowledge of the act and then fires Tasha for disclosing the information to the team. In the season finale she is seen on Crawford's private plane, advising his daughter Blake who is now the head of his corporation HCI Global following Hank's death.
Season 4[]
Tasha goes to work undercover for the CIA, aligning herself with Blake Crawford at HCI Global. When Madeline Burke kills Blake and the board members, Tasha becomes a fixer for her.
Along with another of Madeline's fixers, Tasha has to work undercover to get Reade's password. She is made to torture him despite her reluctance. Finally, the other fixer points a gun at Tasha and demands that Reade give them the codes or she'll kill Tasha. Reade complies. It is later revealed that the other fixer was an undercover MI6 agent, and that Tasha and her decided to fake her death in order to solidify Madeline's trust.
Tasha has Boston Arliss Crab join her undercover to play a hacker, since the original hacker refused to show. She has him play along until they discover that the hack is against Air Force One. They realize the building is rigged to explode upon task completion. Their cover is blown and they need to stop the hack so Air Force One won't crash. When Boston nearly has the hack completed, Tasha stays behind to hit the final key so Boston can escape the building. Tasha completes the job and escapes just before the building explodes.
Tasha is traveling to Iceland with the rest of the team (except Rich) when Madeline Burke frames them for her crimes. She goes into hiding with the others.
In the season finale, Tasha and Reade finally kiss in the safe house.
Season 5[]
- "You think you've got this under control, but I can't wait to see it blow up in your face."
- ―Tasha to Madeline[src]
After the drone strike, Tasha is pinned under Reade. He manages to lift the rubble above them long enough for the others to pull Tasha out. But then the rubble crushes him to death. He tells Tasha "I got you" before he dies.
Tasha does her best to keep working on their mission to take down Madeline despite her deep grief. At times, she blames herself for Reade's death.
In And My Axe!, Tasha has Rich secretly buy her a pregnancy test and bring it back to the bunker. The results are positive, and she reveals that she is pregnant with Reade's child.
In Ghost Train, Tasha visits Keaton at the CIA safe house in Malta. After speaking with Keaton, she realizes that she has walked into a trap and that Madeline got to Keaton and is spying on them. Keaton tells Tasha that he's sorry, but that Madeline took his wife and daughter. Madeline arrives to take Tasha, and Keaton wishes Tasha luck before attempting to shoot Madeline. Keaton is shot by Madeline's body guards, and Madeline captures Tasha and taunts her by talking about the people she knows who have died. When Madeline brings up Reade, Tasha's rage gives her the strength to break free of the chair she is tied to and fight Madeline. She is winning until Madeline's guards intervene.
In Brass Tacks, Tasha's friends free her from the FBI. Together, they retake the FBI and share proof of Madeline's crimes with journalist Megan Butani. When they learn that Madeline is trying to flee the country, Tasha is the first one on Madeline's private plane. There, she asks Madeline where the ZIP bombs are. But Madeline poisons her own drink and dies.
Personality[]
Tasha is committed to her job and has high moral values as seen several times on the show when she had to face different shady circumstances. Despite her formality, she enjoys teasing Reade and sharing a few jokes with her team. She's also caring of others, outgoing, and empathic.
